Designer Teardrops: The Odd and Avante-Garde

And to think there would never be such thing as innovation in designer jewelry! Although this particular trend can be described as a bit odd and avante-garde….

The trend is “Tear Jewelry.” Created by Dutch designer Eric Klarenbeek, we’re talking about jewelry that actually hangs from your eyeball. No joke.

Okay, though, it’s a bit of an exaggeration. Not really from your eyeball. Think of a type of necklace hung by medical wire, only it’s grafted onto contact lenses, with or without prescription. Just below the eye, you can then walk around during the day with the sparkles glistening in the sunlight, looking as if you had been gently crying endearingly. There are a large assortment of different styles, too–crystals, flowers, teardrop-shaped glass, whatever. The sky’s the limit.

It’s apparently been warmly welcomed by the fashion community all over the world and is beginning to receive the certificates allowing it to be sold in designer stores. What’s amazing is they’re just as comfortable as regular contacts, they don’t get in the way of the eye whenever it blinks or moves. Even if someone purposely tried to pull the jewelry, your eye will most definitely survive; either the contact lens would simply come out, or at worst the wire would break.

While odd and definitely avante-garde, the imagination and style behind it is quite exciting, something we might see for a long time and revamped and reworked on several occasions by many other designers. It’ll be the new “body piercing” of our generation, our century. Definitely something to not cry about!
